MADE IN GREECE
Our factory is located in the hills of Thessaloniki, Greece’s nr. 2 city. It’s a family business that was founded in 1942, now run by the second generation. We visit the facility often and have established a strong relationship with the owners, which is always a great pleasure. Thessaloniki is a historical harbour city that is known for a unique mix of cultures, humble and warm people and of course their lovely food.
Blanc set out to be a basics brand. Yet, we wanted to remain an open mind to determine the kind of basics that truly fit modern life and times. So, we started with a basic T-Shirt and built on from there. After the first batch was sold and our customer base increased we felt comfortable to set-up meetings with more advanced manufacturers. Our interpretation of modern basics is a combination of sports and leisure, loungewear and outerwear. The concept of specific clothes for specific occasions just feels outdated and irrelevant to us. Bridging different contexts and creating a hybrid collection of multi-purpose-clothes is our way to contribute to a flexible and dynamic lifestyle. The success of the idea depends mostly on the capability of our factory to come up with clever techniques and innovative materials.
After meeting with the Greeks and receiving the first prototypes we knew we had found the right partner. We were impressed by their craftsmanship. They have over 70 years of experience in the craft of underwear and basics and execute the full process in-house; spinning, knitting, dyeing, cutting, sewing and packing. It’s not easy to have a full in-house operation, especially when you operate on a small scale. Yet, it’s the only way to ensure the highest standard throughout the whole entire process. Both in terms of product quality and working conditions.
Luxury meets sustainability
The concept of minimalism all comes down to quality. When you strip everything away, every little mistake is fully exposed. And since underwear and basics are worn frequently and directly to the skin, it requires a flawless execution.
Over the years, our factory has build longterm relationships with premium suppliers of cotton and wool but also more innovative fabrics such as micro-modal. Again, it’s not only a matter of quality here. Also the impact on the environment and ethical standards are taken into account. For instance, modal is a natural fabric made of beech wood fibres. Its process requires 20 times less water than cotton, yet it’s softer than silk, breathable and absorbent. We use modal from Lenzing®, an Austrian company that is known for their innovative approach to semi-artificial fabrics. Lenzing® modal is made of fibres from naturally grown beech trees, gained from organic forestries. The leftover materials of this process are used by the food industry to make sweeteners.
We’re proud to see our garments made by skilled craftsmen and women. It’s something we’ll continue to update you about, since our craft and quality and the essential assets of our brand.
